Community Services Block Grant

The Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) requires states applying for this grant to submit a state plan that includes assurances that the funds will be used to support activities designed to assist low-income families and individuals. The plan will also include a description of how such activities enable families and individuals to attain an adequate education, paying particular attention to improving literacy skills of low-income families, which may include carrying out family literacy initiatives. This program is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Funding: Block grants are awarded to states based on formula. States may award grants to eligible entities.

Use of Funds: CSBG grants may be used for a wide variety of activities geared toward assisting low-income families and individuals. Family literacy initiatives are an allowable use of CSBG funds under this act.
